Travel Texas – Dallas – State Fair of Texas – September 27 – October 20

Texas’s motto is “Go Big” and this year they will unveil the brand new Big Tex at the opening of the State Fair of Texas starting September 27. “Big” is not an understatement – Big Tex stands over 52 feet! After an accident with some wiring burned him down last year, money was raised to rebuild him better and stronger.

Want to see how his hand was designed?

Another “must do” at the State Fair of Texas is trying the fried foods. Every year vendors compete for the most creative fried foods. This year’s winners are the Deep-Fried Cuban Roll and the Fried Thanksgiving Dinner. Greasy goodness!

There are a number of activities (cooking demonstrations, shows, car/truck shows, rodeo, etc), local bands, several marketplaces, and a number of rides throughout the park (check out this year’s 500ft Top o’ Texas Tower). The kids will enjoy the petting zoo, the dog show, pig races, a play farm exhibit, birds of the world show, and the Betsy the Cow in the Oakfarms activity exhibit. (One tip – you can purchase jugs of milk or juice for $1) Everything costs tickets so you exchange money (or swipe your credit card) for a number of tickets to purchase food or rides. Every night at 8pm will be the illumination sensation show.

If you’d like to see a college football game, you’ll have to purchase a separate ticket.
Sat., Sept. 28, Louisiana Tech vs Army 2:30 p.m. kickoff.
Sat., Oct. 5, Southwest Airlines State Fair Classic® featuring Grambling State vs. Prairie View A&M. 4:30 p.m. kickoff.
Sat., Oct. 12, AT&T Red River Rivalry® as Oklahoma takes on Texas.
